Elytra are a unique item in Minecraft that allows players to glide through the air, mimicking the properties of wings. Unlike true flight, however, Elytra require an external boost to gain momentum and altitude. This boost is primarily achieved using firework rockets, which provide the necessary propulsion to travel long distances. Mastering Elytra flight can dramatically change how you traverse the game world, opening up new possibilities for exploration, transportation, and even combat.

Acquiring Elytra

Elytra are exclusively found in the End dimension, specifically within End Ships. These ships are part of the larger End City structures that generate after the Ender Dragon has been defeated. Firework rockets can be crafted using a paper, a gunpowder, and a firework star. The firework star, made from gunpowder and dye, determines the color and effect of the explosion (though effects are not relevant for Elytra propulsion). The crucial component for flight is the 'flight duration' of the rocket, which is determined by the number of gunpowder used in its crafting recipe. More gunpowder results in a longer flight duration. A rocket with a flight duration of 1 (made with one gunpowder) will give a short burst, while a rocket with a flight duration of 3 (made with three gunpowder) will provide the longest boost.

Optimizing Flight Paths

Effective Elytra flight involves more than just spamming firework rockets. Players often develop strategies to chain boosts and maintain altitude.
