How to one cycle the ender dragon

Overview

The Ender Dragon is the final boss in Minecraft's Survival mode, found in The End dimension. Defeating it is a major milestone for players. A 'one-cycle' refers to defeating the dragon in a single encounter, ideally without it regaining significant health from Ender Crystals.

Destroying Ender Crystals

Before you can effectively damage the dragon, you must destroy all the Ender Crystals located on top of obsidian pillars. These crystals heal the dragon, making it nearly invincible if they remain. Some crystals are unprotected, while others are caged in iron bars. For unprotected crystals, a bow and arrow are the most efficient tool. Aim carefully to hit the crystal. For caged crystals, you'll need to build up to them or use TNT. Be cautious, as exploding crystals deal significant damage.

Preparing for the Fight

Gear is paramount for a successful one-cycle. Aim for diamond or netherite armor, enchanted with Protection IV. A diamond or netherite sword with Sharpness V and Unbreaking III will maximize your melee damage. For ranged combat, a bow enchanted with Power V, Infinity (or Mending if you prefer to bring arrows), and Unbreaking III is essential. Potions are also vital: Potions of Slow Falling are a lifesaver, preventing fall damage from the dragon's attacks. Potions of Strength can boost your melee damage, and Potions of Invisibility can help you reposition or avoid Endermen.

The Dragon's Attack Patterns

The Ender Dragon has several attack patterns. It will swoop down, shoot dragon's breath (a purple cloud that deals damage over time), and charge at the player. When it hovers or swoops, it's an opportunity to attack with your sword. The dragon's breath attack can be dodged or countered with potions. Be mindful of the Endermen that spawn in The End; avoid looking directly at them unless you are prepared to fight.

Executing the One-Cycle

Once all Ender Crystals are destroyed, the dragon will stop healing. It will then begin to perch on the central End portal structure periodically. This is your primary window of opportunity to deal massive damage. As the dragon lands, rush in with your enchanted sword and attack its head or body. Use your Strength potions here. If you have an Infinity bow, you can continue to shoot it as it flies. If you are using Mending, ensure you have plenty of arrows. The goal is to deal enough damage during these perching phases to deplete its health before it can take off again and potentially re-activate any remaining crystals (though in a true one-cycle, all crystals are destroyed first). Persistence and precise timing are key.

Advanced Strategies

Some players use beds to deal massive explosive damage to the dragon when it perches. Beds explode when used in The End, dealing significant damage. However, this is a risky strategy as the explosion can also harm the player. Placing blocks strategically can help you reach crystals or avoid dragon breath. Water buckets can be used to negate fall damage in a pinch, but Slow Falling potions are more reliable.
