What is Lyocell?

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic cellulose fiber manufactured from sustainably harvested wood pulp. Unlike cotton, which requires significant water and pesticides, lyocell is created through a chemical process using a non-toxic solvent system that is almost completely recycled. This makes it an environmentally friendly textile option for the modern consumer.

Manufacturing Process

Lyocell is produced through a closed-loop lyocell process where wood pulp is dissolved in a solvent and then regenerated into fibers. The unique feature of this process is that approximately 99% of the solvent is recovered and reused, significantly reducing environmental impact. This is a major advantage over traditional viscose rayon production, which discards harmful chemical waste.

Properties and Characteristics

Lyocell fabric is exceptionally soft and smooth, often compared to silk for comfort. It is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, making it suitable for activewear and intimate apparel. The fabric is also more durable than rayon, resists wrinkles better, and holds dyes beautifully, resulting in vibrant colors. Tencel, produced by the Austrian company Lenzing, is the world's largest producer of lyocell fiber and holds significant market share.
