Overview of Ujjwala 2.0

Ujjwala 2.0 is the second and expanded phase of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, India's flagship program designed to promote clean cooking fuel and reduce indoor air pollution. Launched on August 10, 2021, this phase aims to provide free LPG gas connections to an additional 1 crore (10 million) households that were previously left out or newly eligible under relaxed criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

The scheme covers Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes households, and other economically disadvantaged sections. The primary eligibility is based on government-issued BPL cards or inclusion in various social welfare lists. Applicants must not already have an active LPG connection under their name.

Benefits Provided

Under Ujjwala 2.0, eligible beneficiaries receive a complete cooking solution at no cost. This includes a free LPG connection, a stove (chulha) with necessary fittings, and the first LPG refill completely free of charge. The connection comes with a standardized cylinder and safety equipment including a pressure regulator with magnetic relief valve.

Implementation and Impact

The scheme has successfully transitioned millions of households from biomass and solid fuel cooking to cleaner LPG fuel. This transition significantly reduces indoor air pollution, particularly benefiting women and children who traditionally spend more time in kitchens. Each connection is digitally tracked through Aadhar-linked registration, ensuring transparency and preventing duplicate connections.
