Diamond Clarity Grades

VVS (Very Very Slightly Included) represents one of the highest grades on the GIA clarity scale, which measures the presence of internal and external imperfections in diamonds. These imperfections, called inclusions and blemishes, affect the stone's transparency and light performance. VVS grades indicate diamonds of exceptional quality with barely perceptible imperfections.

What VVS Means

VVS diamonds contain tiny inclusions that are virtually impossible to see without magnification. A trained gemologist using a 10x magnification loupe can barely detect these imperfections. The distinction between VVS1 and VVS2 relates to the exact size, location, and visibility of these minute inclusions. To the naked eye, VVS diamonds appear completely clean and flawless, making them ideal for fine jewelry.

The Clarity Scale

The GIA clarity scale consists of eleven grades: FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, and I3. VVS occupies the third and fourth positions, representing exceptional quality. Above VVS are only the extremely rare Flawless and Internally Flawless grades, which cost significantly more. Diamonds below VVS, like VS (Very Slightly Included), have more visible inclusions but often offer better value.

Value and Practical Considerations

VVS diamonds command premium prices due to their rarity and near-perfect appearance. However, for practical purposes, VS (Very Slightly Included) diamonds offer excellent value, as inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and their prices are substantially lower. The choice between grades depends on budget, jewelry setting, and personal preferences regarding quality standards.
