Overview of WCAG 2.2

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 (WCAG 2.2) represents the latest evolution of the W3C's accessibility standards. Released in October 2023, it builds upon the foundation of WCAG 2.1 while introducing new criteria that address emerging accessibility challenges in digital environments. WCAG 2.2 aims to ensure that all people, regardless of ability, can access and interact with digital content effectively.

Key Principles and Structure

WCAG 2.2 is built on four core principles known as POUR: Perceivable (content must be visible and understandable to users), Operable (users must be able to navigate and interact with content), Understandable (content and navigation must be clear), and Robust (content must work across different devices and assistive technologies). These principles guide the development of accessible digital experiences.

Conformance Levels

WCAG 2.2 defines three conformance levels that organizations can aim to achieve. Level A is the foundational level meeting minimum accessibility requirements. Level AA is the intermediate level and is widely considered the baseline for most organizations and is often mandated by regulations. Level AAA is the highest level, requiring advanced accessibility features. Most web standards and legal requirements target Level AA compliance.

New Criteria in WCAG 2.2

WCAG 2.2 introduces 13 new success criteria that address gaps identified since WCAG 2.1. These new criteria cover areas such as accessible authentication, target spacing for touch interfaces, focus visible requirements, and better guidance for accessible forms. The updates reflect current web development practices and the need for better mobile and touch accessibility.

Implementation and Compliance

Implementing WCAG 2.2 involves auditing content, updating design and development practices, testing with assistive technologies, and training teams on accessibility principles. Many organizations work incrementally toward compliance, starting with Level A and advancing toward Level AA. Compliance is increasingly important as many countries have adopted accessibility requirements into law, particularly for public websites and services.
