How It Works

The JLPT assesses Japanese language proficiency through a standardized multiple-choice format administered in a single session lasting approximately 2-3 hours depending on the level. The test evaluates three key components: language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading comprehension, and listening ability. There are five proficiency levels from N5 (basic) to N1 (advanced), with each level requiring mastery of specific kanji characters, vocabulary words, and grammatical structures. For example, N5 requires knowledge of approximately 100 kanji and 800 vocabulary words, while N1 requires knowledge of approximately 2,000 kanji and 10,000 vocabulary words.
