Overview

Zenitsu Agatsuma is a central character in Koyoharu Gotouge's manga series 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,' which was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020. The story is set in Japan's Taishō era (1912-1926), specifically around 1915 when Zenitsu becomes a demon slayer. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization founded over 1,000 years earlier during the Heian period to combat demons created by Muzan Kibutsuji. Zenitsu's background involves being orphaned and falling into debt, leading him to be saved by Jigoro Kuwajima, who recognized his potential despite Zenitsu's extreme cowardice. The Demon Slayer Corps operates with around 200-300 active slayers during this period, organized under the leadership of Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Zenitsu's journey begins when he's forced to take the Final Selection exam on Mount Fujikasane, where he must survive seven days against demons to earn his place in the corps.

Zenitsu becomes a demon slayer through a specific training and selection process. First, he undergoes rigorous training under Jigoro Kuwajima for approximately one year, learning Thunder Breathing techniques. The Thunder Breathing style consists of 6 main forms, with Zenitsu initially mastering only the First Form: Thunderclap and Flash. His unique ability manifests when he falls unconscious or asleep - his body automatically executes perfect Thunder Breathing techniques at incredible speeds. The selection process involves passing the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane, where candidates must survive for 7 days against demons trapped by wisteria flowers. Successful candidates receive a Nichirin Sword (which turns yellow for Zenitsu) and a uniform. Zenitsu's fighting method relies on his enhanced hearing, which allows him to detect demons and predict attacks. When conscious, he's paralyzed by fear, but when unconscious, he can execute techniques like Thunderclap and Flash Sixfold, delivering 6 consecutive strikes at lightning speed. Later, he develops the self-created Seventh Form: Honoikazuchi no Kami, which combines all Thunder Breathing techniques.
